Facebook Co-founder Finds Jumo, A Social Network for Nonprofits

What can one person possibly do after they’ve created one of the most popular websites on the planet? Create another one. Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, took a stab at another social media website. According to their website, Jumo is a social network connecting individuals and organizations who want to change the world.

Hughes, along with helping Mark Zuckerberg create Facebook in a Harvard dorm room, also ran President Barrack Obama’s online campaign that vaulted him to the White House. Hughes thinks those skills can be applied to nonprofit organizations to help them connect with constituents in a whole new way.

Since it’s founding in February 2010 with the official site launch this past November, Jumo has set out to help you find issues and organizations you care about in hopes that you support their work with your time, money and skills.

Chances are you have a Facebook account. If you do, the experience on Jumo should feel similar. Using your Facebook login information, you can join Jumo, take a quick survey about the causes you care about. Then you have access to the news from those organizations and issues. It’s similar to getting the latest scoop from your News Feed on Facebook.

If you don’t find the nonprofit organization or issue you’re looking for, any 501(c)(3) with a charitable mission can create a profile for their organization. So encourage your nonprofit to get involved. Jumo will process donations for organizations that provide the appropriate information.

But Jumo is less about donations and more about connections. You can add to the cause by simply connecting today. What does Jumo mean anyway? In the West African language of Yoruba it means, “to come together.” Hopefully Hughes can achieve success once again and get people to come together and support causes they care about. Our world will be better for it.
